Collaborative Close Reading Seminar, 7 November 2007

This seminar performed an exercise in 'collaborative close reading'.  Four texts dealing with ideal states and utopias were selected and pre-circulated using the VRE.  In the virtual seminar itself they were severally introduced and then discussed among the group.  Such an approach seems an ideal means of taking advantage of the technology.

The four texts up for discussion were:

  1. Thomas More, Of the beste state of a publique weale, and of the newe yle, called Utopia (1629 edn)
  2. T.N., Pleasant dialogue between a lady called Listra, and a pilgrim concerning the government and commonweale of the great province of Cangalor (1579)
  3. The free state of Noland [1696]
  4. William Godwin, An enquiry concerning political justice, and its influence on general virtue and happiness (1793)
